Lash Extension Aftercare: 10 Rules for Longer-Lasting Lashes
You've got your fresh set of lash extensions, and you're obsessed. Now the real question: how do you keep them looking this good for the next two to three weeks?
Great aftercare is honestly half of the lash game. Your artist does their part in the chair, but what you do at home determines how long your set stays full and fluffy — or how fast it starts shedding. Here are the 10 rules we give every client at Lashes of Atlanta.
1. Keep Them Completely Dry for the First 24 Hours
This is the golden rule. Your adhesive needs time to fully cure, and water is the enemy during that window. That means no washing your face the normal way, no steam, no saunas, no crying at rom-coms, and definitely no pool. If you need to splash your face, do it carefully with a damp cloth and keep the water away from your lash line.
2. Ditch Oil-Based Products — Everywhere Near Your Eyes
Oil is the number one killer of lash extension retention. It breaks down the adhesive bond, causing extensions to slide right off your natural lashes. Check your makeup remover, moisturizer, sunscreen, and eye cream — if "oil" is in the ingredient list, it doesn't belong r your eyes anymore. Switch to oil-free, lash-extension-safe products.
3. No Rubbing, Pulling, or Sleeping Face-Down
This sounds obvious, but it's the hardest habit to break. Rubbing your eyes — even lightly — twists extensions and stresses your natural lashes. Side sleepers, try to stay on one side with your face off the pillow, or invest in a contoured sleep mask. Pulling at extensions when they start to grow out can damage your natural lash underneath.
4. Clean Your Lashes Daily (Yes, Really)
One of the biggest myths is that washing your lashes makes them fall out faster. The opposite is true: skipping cleansing lets oil, makeup residue, and bacteria build up at the lash line, which weakens the bond and can cause irritation or even infection. Use a gentle, oil-free lash cleanser or foaming cleanser with a soft brush every day, rinse carefully, and pat dry.
5. Brush Them — But Only With a Clean Spoolie
Your lashes will get a little wild overnight or after washing. A clean mascara spoolie (the wand kind, no product) straightens everything out in seconds. Brush from the middle of the lash upward and outward — never from the base — and do it when your lashes are dry, not soaking wet.
6. Skip Mascara and Waterproof Eyeliner
Most mascaras — especially waterproof formulas — are off-limits with extensions. They coat the extensions, add weight, and are nearly impossible to remove without damaging the bond. If you absolutely want more drama, a water-based, extension-safe mascara applied only to the tips is the compromise — but honestly, a good volume set shouldn't need any mascara at all.
7. Be Careful With Heat: Saunas, Ovens, and Cigarettes
Direct heat can singe or warp synthetic extensions. That includes hot yoga studios and saunas (fine occasionally, but expect slightly faster shedding), sticking your face in a hot oven, and — a sneaky one — the heat from a cigarette or lighter. If you're a regular at the sauna, mention it to your artist; they may adjust the adhesive they use.
8. Don't Try to Remove Them Yourself
When your set starts looking grown out, resist the urge to pick, pull, or attempt a DIY removal with oil or steam. Improper removal can take your natural lashes with it and leave gaps that take months to grow back. A professional removal takes about 15 minutes and is completely painless. Most salons offer it as a standalone service.
9. Book Your Fill Every 2–3 Weeks
Your natural lashes shed and regrow in a cycle, so you'll lose extensions naturally as your own lashes fall. Scheduling a fill appointment every two to three weeks keeps your set consistently full and costs less than waiting until you need a whole new full set. Set your next appointment before you leave the salon — it fills your calendar and guarantees your artist's availability.
10. Tell Your Artist What's Going On
Shedding faster than usual? Irritation? A lash twisted sideways? Don't just live with it — tell your artist. They can adjust the curl, length, weight, or adhesive formula at your next appointment to suit your lashes and your lifestyle. Lashes are a partnership: the better your artist understands what's happening between appointments, the better your retention will be.
The Takeaway
Aftercare isn't complicated — it's just consistent. Keep them dry the first day, keep oil away, clean them daily, and stay on your fill schedule. Do those four things and your extensions will look fresh from fill to fill.
